Wenzhou Small and Medium Enterprises Commerce president Zhou de Wen said most industries in the city traditionally enter their peak manufacturing season in Q2. Wen estimates 70 percent of companies in China would need to take out a loan to sustain operations, procure raw materials and boost capacity during these busy months. But as banks are unlikely to grant loans to SMEs, Zhou believes many such companies would have to fold in the next few months.


Because of the difficulty in obtaining a bank loan, most SMEs turn to private lenders for their funding needs. These creditors, however, slap on interest rates that are on average four times higher than bank rates. Some private lenders charge as much as 10 times more than what banks do.


Due to the exorbitant rate, SMEs typically apply for short-term loans of three or six months. To cover the high interest rate, some companies raise export prices. But this is not the preferred option as it comes with the risk of losing business. As an alternative measure, some exporters request a higher deposit from buyers while leaving quotes unchanged.

Footwear exports could improve significantly in Q2 2011 as well, as the EU cancelled the 16.5 percent anti-dumping duty on China-made shoes. This took effect on April 1, and suppliers are already seeing an increase in orders from the EU.


LED lighting product suppliers are also confident of strong sales in the second quarter. Demand for energy-saving alternatives remains high and is expected to boost exports in the segment.

Transitioning from a contract manufacturing business model to one that emphasizes ODM and OBM has increasingly become a popular strategy during the past two years. Suppliers have realized how focusing on OEM can depress their bottom line and overall development. Not only are such companies often at a disadvantage in price negotiations, but many of their products are also slapped with anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties by importing countries.


As with most developments in China's export manufacturing industry, it is the large enterprises that have taken the first step toward reducing OEM's share of their business. But even they cannot stop receiving contract manufacturing orders completely as doing so could prove disastrous.


For one thing, China brands are not likely to gain wide acceptance in traditional markets in a short span of time. Suppliers are instead easing out OEM transactions in emerging economies such as South America, Southeast Asia and Africa. They believe it is easier to promote OBM lines there as consumers in those markets are more conscious about price than established brands.


One of the country's major manufacturers of massagers, Wenzhou Shengli Healthcare Equipment Co. Ltd. distributes its iRest line to retail stores in the Philippines, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The company has since stopped accepting OEM orders from these countries. OBM sales now contribute roughly one-third to total turnover.


While refusing OEM orders could affect relationships with long-term clients and may reduce market share, Guangdong Galanz Enterprise Group Co. Ltd. believes product choice is key. As long as the company can offer a range of innovative products at competitive price points, the brand can gain gradual market acceptance.

China Joins Race to Develop IOT Standard-hongkong advertising company
















 

China suppliers have intensified efforts to develop an IOT standard, which they hope will be the benchmark for a global regulation. Presently, the lack of a unified standard and high chip costs are preventing mass manufacture of IOT products.


Still in its nascent stage, the Internet of Things industry has seen worldwide development gain pace in 2010. But widespread adoption does not seem likely in the near future, simply because a global standard is not yet in place.


IOT refers to the networked interconnection of various devices and appliances. A unified regulation is necessary because devices need to follow one protocol to be able to work together and achieve intelligent control. The interface and chips have to be standardized. Without a global communications protocol, IOT product manufacturers will be unable to work with exchange operators and retailers. Such devices then would be no different from ordinary products such as conventional home appliances.


The US, the EU, Japan and China have all intensified efforts to come up with their own standard, which can then be the basis for a global regulation.


Several of China's largest export manufacturers have been in the IOT field since 2005, some even earlier. Home appliances, smart meters and electronic tags are just a few examples of products that have been built for networked interconnectivity. These companies formed a team to work on an Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing standard that could regulate IOT development.


The sooner they are able to come up with a domestic standard, the easier it will be to pitch said regulation for worldwide use. This can then reduce technical barriers for China suppliers, who also would not need to pay IP fees to organizations in developed countries.


The Midea Group and the Haier Group have both been able to develop core control chips and are now working on integrating the power grid with the intercommunication, Internet, radio and TV networks.


Haier has already received approval for seven industry and nine national IOT standards. It has also submitted applications for two international standards, of which one could be China's first in the home network field. The company has also applied for more than 1,000 patents for its IOT home appliances line.


Further, Haier is working closely with telecom operators, and radio and TV networks to include IOT in their product promotions. These operators then select companies that have significant investment in the IOT field such as ZTE and Huawei to work on developing the transmission network.
